Read vs. Views

As a writer, I am often amazed I see a story with a ton of views with very few reads, a ton of views. It got me wondering how Medium determines a read and a view.

Well, we start with the definition of a reader according to the dictionary. The definition below is the verb definition.

  1. look at and comprehend the meaning of (written or printed matter) by mentally interpreting the characters or symbols of which it is composed.
  2. “it’s the best novel I’ve ever read”

Now according to the noun definition of a word, it states:

  1. having a specified level of knowledge as a result of reading.
  2. "Ada was well-read in French literature"
  3. having a readership of a specified extent.
  4. "It is still a widely read newspaper"

Now the way Medium determines a read, or what does Medium count as a read? Well, the short answer is a Medium read is when the person viewing your story makes it all the way to the bottom. Yes, it means that Medium can show you how many people actually loved your article enough to finish it.

A good Medium read ratio is generally between 20 and 50%. It depends, though, on the length of your article and the audience you’re trying…
