What happened to Old Hollywood?

When you think of Hollywood you think of Lights, Cameras, and Action! So when did Hollywood truly begin, and what was the first film ever made. First, let me say Old Hollywood is still there you just have to look for it because only pieces of it still remain.

Harvey Wilcox laid out Hollywood as a subdivision in 1887, he was a prohibitionist from Kansas. However, real-estate magnate H.J. Whitley transformed Hollywood into a wealthy and popular residential area. Hollywood became a municipality in 1903 and was incorporated into Los Angeles in 1910.

The original Hollywood Sign

Hollywood is located in the heart of Los Angeles, and is known as the power house of the entertainment industry. Hollywood beginnings was a small adobe hut in 1853, where it stands today. Harvey Henry Wilcox and his second wife Daeida moved to Los Angeles from Topeka, Kansas in 1883 he purchased 150 acres just west of Hollywood and attempted his hand at ranching. In 1887, he filed plans with Los Angeles County Recorder’s office to subdivide the land, and upscale home sprung up on Prospect Avenue.

By the turn of the century, Hollywood had a post office, markets, a hotel, a livery and even a street car. In 1902, banker and real estate mogul H. J. Whitley, also known as the “Father of Hollywood,” stepped in.
