Black Artists and Filmmakers Showcased:
Some of the best movies in Hollywood that were ever made were created by leading black film stars, ranging from Lena Horne to Sydney Poitier. However, black cinema started in 1898.
The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures Regeneration of Black Cinema from 1898–1971 Opened on August 21, 2022. The regeneration shows a rigorous and celebratory exploration of achievements and challenges black filmmakers faced during the dawn of cinema and the civil rights movement.
Some of the film artists that will be featured include Oscar Micheaux, The Nicholas Brothers, Cab Calloway, Josephine Baker, Lena Horne, Harry Belafonte, Ruby Dee, Ossie Davis, Sidney Poitier, Paul Robeson, Lorraine Hansberry, Gordon Parks, Melvin Van Peebles along with other important black artists.
The importance of black performers and filmmakers helped to define cinema as we know it today. The exhibition explores the achievements and challenges of both independent production and the studio system, from cinema’s infancy in the 1890s through the height of the civil rights movement.
