Academy Museum Finally Opens

After years of waiting, A Dream finally came true.

After 92 years, the Academy dream was finally made a reality. The founders of the Academy had a vision of making a museum like this. The first offices of the Academy of Motion Pictures were located in the Taft Building at the corner of Hollywood and Vine, which is a 12-story building.

The Academy was founded in 1927, as a non profit organization and it originally had 36 members. In 2012, their vision started to unfold when they hired architect Renzo Piano Building workshop for the new Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. It would tell the story cinema.

The original home that house the Academy of Motion Pictures offices was the Taft building and it was constructed by architects Percy A. Eisen, and Albert R. Walker, they are are also responsible for the Fine Arts building, the James Oviatt building the Hotel Normandie and the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. The Taft building is an example Classical Revival architecture.

A few of the offices that were located in the building were all of the movie studios had offices here, Charlie Chaplin and Will Rogers, and Clark Gable’s dentist had an office here. In 1999, the Taft building became one of the Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monuments.
